The black hole of public transportation

This is a portion of the RTA map showing our new house (we're moving in this weekend). I haven't owned a car in ten years, but it looks like I'll have to get one.

Where do you have to commute to?

There is a Metra station in Barrington. I don't really know the LBO (Land Beyond O'Hare) well, as my time living in Chicago was spent living well in the depths of Chicago, but Metra may give you a bit of reprieve.

But, yes, sadly, like most American suburbs, it's real tough to get anywhere without a car in the suburbs of Chicago.

For the past six years I've been living in a place where I could literally catch a bus by walking out my front door. Within a half-mile I had 5 bus routes. I could walk to work, to school, to the grocery store. I haven't owned a car since 1997, simply because it made no sense to spend all that money on something I was hardly ever going to use. Now I'm pretty much forced to.
